Alaska's Lake Clark National Park and Preserve
is a trailless wilderness-no beaten paths, no cabins, just you
out there off-hiking the wildest remaining spot on the North
American continent. Covering four million acres from the shores
of Cook Inlet, across the frenzied maze of Chigmit Mountains
peaks to the tundra wilderness in the west, this huge tract of
Cook Inlet 150 miles southwest of Anchorage will not disappoint.
Visitors are few and natural spectacles abound.
Our
fly-in backpacking trip is the best way to see a stunning portion
of the Park's vast western interior. We charter a floatplane and
land at the shores of Turquoise Lake, then strike out through open
tundra, hike to a living glacier and wake to herds of caribou. We
will cover territory that includes the jagged 6,000 foot Chigmit
Mountains, three National Wild and Scenic Rivers, glacier-carved
valleys, boreal forests and even two active volcanoes. On the Lake
Clark backcountry trek we'll map our own route, kayak glacier-gouged
lakes, camp in deluxe comfort, commune with moose and see no humans.
